Chinese health or therapy balls can a very helpful alternative treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis, two problems which plague massage therapists, musicians, athletes and anyone who sits typing at a keyboad for long periods of time. The Baoding balls (so called because they were invented in Baoding, China during the Ming dynasty) have been used for the health and well being of the hands and upper body for hundreds of years and come in sets of two in a silk covered box. They are both meant to be rotated in the hand, one hand at a time and in both directions. Most people find it easier to rotate them in one direction than the other with each hand but with daily practice, you should be able to rotate them smoothly in both directions.

The therapeutic principles behind using the health balls comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM. The Chinese believe that most illnesses and health problems come from a blockage in the meridians or energy channels of the body and that by removing the blockage, health can be restored. Two of the tools that the Chinese physician uses are acupuncture (thin needles inserted into the energy channels) and acupressure massage (trigger points). There are many acupressure points in the hands which lead to other organs of the body including the heart and the “tunnel” which gets blocked in carpal tunnel syndrome. The Chinese term for this is “jingluo”. So by rotating the health balls in your hands, you are sending energy through your hands, up your arms and all the way to your heart. You are also using muscles in your hands, arms and upper torso that you might not normally use so you are strengthening these muscles at the same time as you are opening energy channels. Both of these things may help to prevent arthritis and give some relief from the stress and irritation of arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. You can also use therapy balls as a meditation aid and to quiet the mind of unwanted chatter. You will find that it is very hard to do or think about anything else while you are rotating the balls. They force you to be really here in this moment, the very purpose of meditation. Each ball has a small chime in it and they are pitched differently to provide different sounds and overtones. The musical pitches themselves can also be therapeutic as each pitch and overtone of that pitch corresponds to an organ of the body. So while you are rotating the health balls, you are exercising the joints and muscles in your hands, you may be opening up blocked energy channels, you are quieting your mind in meditation and you are sending healing energy to organs of the body with different pitches from the balls. These are a lot of therapeutic benefits from such a small simple thing as rotating two metal balls your hands. And it's fun too!

 Mala beads, also known as prayer or worry beads have been used in various forms and in many cultures and religions for centuries. Ancient Buddhist statues and cave paintings show Buddhist figures holding mala beads. The Greeks have long used worry beads. And in Christianity, the mala beads were extended in length to become the rosary.
