JAZZ PIANO & MUSIC LESSONS:
Marilynn
Seits now offers jazz piano and improvisation lessons at her New York
location. Learn to play jazz and improvise without memorizing "solos"
or using music. Reading music helps but is not necessary for playing
music by ear. Lessons in improvisation are offered for other
instruments as well as piano. Bring your horn or bass and Marilynn will
play with you teaching how to play standards, blues, how to trade "4s"
etc. We will record something each lesson either in MIDI if you're a pianist or composer or w/ mics for other instruments or vocals. Recording frequently is important so you can be comfortable with it and you can track your progress better from week to week. Marilynn studied piano with the great Sir Roland Hanna in New York City and she has recorded 6 jazz and blues CDs.
CLASSICAL PIANO LESSONS:
Marilynn studied classical piano music at the University of Illinois in Chanpaign, Urbana and has been playing the piano for most of her life. She can teach you to read music, write the notation by hand or on the computer, learn theory and the forms for music and learn to play simplified versions of classical pieces if you're a beginner. You will also record something every lesson and this will help you to track your progress from week to week.
COMPOSITION LESSONS:
Marilynn Seits studied composition with legendary saxophonist/clarinetist Jimmy Guiffre, the composer of "Four Brothers" and "The Train and the River" and has composed the music of 9 or 10 CDs, both jazz and New Age music. She can help you to get your musical ideas down on paper or to the computer so that you or others can play and hear your music. Marilynn and The Vibrations Jazz Ensemble just finished recording a CD of the jazz compositions of Hal Abercrombie, her star pupil, titled "Why Katrina Why". This CD will be released in September and will be available online and in retail stores shortly after. When Hal first came to Marilynn for lessons, he had never written any music and didn't know how to do music notation. Today, he has charts for all of his songs and a full length CD of his music. Marilynn will teach you too, using the methods she learned from Jimmy Guiffe and you will record something every lesson so you too can have a CD of your own music.
