IAJE - the Jazz Educators Conference in New York City, January 2007 - I just returned from the International Assoc. of Jazz Educators conference held at the New York Hilton Hotel and I am in total awe of everything that I saw and heard there from the student jazz bands to the NEA Jazz Masters. Some of the concert highlights were performances by the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band for those of you over 30), trumpeter Ingrid Jensen's band, Anita Brown's Jazz Orchestra, John Fedchok's band, Charlie Hayden's Liberation Band and the Clayton Brothers Band. Some of the jazz masters in attendance were Ramsey Lewis, Dr. Billy Taylor, Nancy Wilson, Phil Woods, Ahmed Jamal, Roy Haynes, Ron Carter, Bob Crenshaw. Downbeat Magazine did a Blindfold Test with Ron Carter before a live audience and there were dozens of seminars on teaching techniques for all instruments as well as technical seminars on internet resources, MySpace and the newest music site, MOG.com. All in all an extremely informative, well organized and exhilarating event.
AMTA National Massage Therapists Convention in Atlanta, Oct. 2006 - Sean and I went to the AMTA annual convention in Atlanta in mid-October. The convention was held at the Atlanta Hilton and was attended by hundreds of therapists taking courses for CEUs and buying new products and supplies in the exhibit hall. We were both very busy selling our Moongate Music CDs and want to thank all our new massage therapist friends and customers for making this show a successful event for us. We hope to see you all again next year in Cincinnati.
TCM Building Bridges Conference in the Meadowlands, NJ, Oct. 2006 - I went to a wonderful conference in early October about building bridges to integrate TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) into Western medicine. There were dozens of MDs, ODs, Doctors of Acupuncture, medical Qigong doctors, nurses, massage therapists and herbalists attending this conference and participating in workshops, daily Qigong sessions, demonstrations of new techniques and products and browsing and buying in the trade show area. I sold a lot of Moongate Music CDs to acupuncturists who were looking for soothing and healing music to use in their practice.
Newport Jazz Festival, July 2006 - I spent a wonderful weekend at Newport recently overdosing on great jazz at the Newport Jazz Festival. Jazz greats like MyCoy Tyner and Dave Brubeck played as well as the great Arutro Sandoval with his Latin Jazz Band, Al Jerreau and George Benson just to name a few - the music was inspiring, the weather was beautiful and the setting on the water with yachts and sailboarts all around can't be beat!
Jazz at Caramoor - I just got back from a wonderful jazz festival at the Caramoor Music and Art Center in Katonah, NY. The great jazz pianist Kirk Lightsley started the day with a piano tribute to John Hicks and former John Coltrane pianist Steve Kuhn played pieces from his new CD recorded with a string chamber orchestra. The headliner McCoy Tyner ended the evening with great performances with his trio, octet and special guest Joe Lovano. Beautiful weather, beautiful setting and just what I moved back to New York to experience!
Marilynn's gig at Berklee School of Music - Marilynn went to Boston on July 25 to play piano in a jazz quartet led by conga player Erica Donnejon. Erica had to do a performance in front of faculty and peers at the end of her junior year majoring in drums/percussion. Marilynn had been in New England on vacation so she made the trip down to Boston from Maine and had a short rehearsal with Erica on congas and her drummer, bass player and flute player. The group received many check marks of "excellent" from the audience critiquing the performance. The musicians all had a great time and agreed that they needed to play together again soon.
Manhattan Jam Sessions - Jazz pianist Marilynn Seits has been heard several times in recent weeks sitting in at the late night jam sessions at Cleopatra's Needle on Manhattan's upper west side. Marilynn has also been taking advantage of all that New York City has to offer going to the fabulous Herbie Hancock Concert at Carnegie Hall in June, the Village Vanguard's 50th anniversary concert and taking in several Broadway shows. West Palm Beach was never like this!
